Fantasy Miniature Painting

This site showcases my work in the hobby of painting fantasy miniatures. Fantasy miniatures are small, usually 28mm tall, made of pewter, and are used in fantasy role-playing and war games. This hobby is popular on an international level and includes conventions, competitions, and classes.

While made for role-playing and wargames, the miniatures I paint are generally for display or competition.

Check back often, as I intend on posting helpful fantasy miniature painting tips on materials, painting techniques and other ideas. I have also compiled a list of fantasy miniatures galleries and manufacturers that is a good starting place.

Some people ask, "Why would you want to paint these tiny things?" And that's a good question. Painting fantasy miniatures is an excellent creative outlet that is relatively inexpensive and takes up little space. Also, attending Cons (conventions) is a great way to meet people and have a lot of fun. There are several fantasy miniature painting groups in the greater Denver area that meet regularly as well.

Have a look through my fantasy miniatures galleries to get an idea of what this hobby is all about. In particular, I love the work of Werner Klock, who sculpts for Reaper and has his ownl line of miniatures, Freebooter Miniatures.

Commissions

I offer a painting service for fantasy miniatures as well. For a basic human-sized figure on a standard base, I charge $100. This cost does not include shipping, or the miniature itself. To start, we first discuss the figure you want painted, color schemes and turnaround times. I will create a mockup of the color scheme to show you. I require a 50% deposit, and currently only accept PayPal. Please see the Contact page to send me an email.

Recent Stuff

2/19/08 I entered Frog King, by Dark Sword Miniatures in the Masters Category at Genghis Con 2008 and won third place. You can see pictures in my gallery.

9/9/07 I did very well at Tacticon 2007 in Denver this year. I entered three models, and won 2 first places, one second place, and best of show. Check out my gallery to see the miniatures.

7/25/07 This weekend I will be taking a three-day class with Jeremie Bonamant, sponsored by Lili Troy at Fellshadow Studio. Two of the days will be 12+ hours of painting, so I'm looking forward to learning a lot. Also, I will be running the paint-and-take sessions at Tacticon this year, which is August 31-September 3 in Denver. You can see more info and register here. At a paint-and-take, you are given a primed and prepped miniature, and you can sit down and paint, ask questions and try out Reaper Master Series paints.

5/21/07 ReaperCon 2007 concluded yesterday, and it was an amazing event. I met many people who I've only known through online forums, and got to see some amazing miniatures. In a tour de force, the Denver Attactix painting group took home 5 or 6 ReaperCon Sophie Trophies- alas, I was not one of them- but I did receive excellent constructive criticism on my entry from the judges. This is most definitely a not-to-be-missed event next year.

3/8/07 I just signed up for classes at ReaperCon in Denton, Texas this May. I'll be taking four classes: Purple & Teal, Black & White: Painting Difficult Colors with Jennifer Haley, Demi-Metallics with Michael Genet, Advanced Color Theory with Amy Brehm and Seeing Red with Anne Foerster. I'm working on the miniature I'll be entering in the competition there, Dern Ironfist by Reaper Miniatures.

2/22/07 I recently attended GenghisCon, Feb. 16-28 in Denver, Colorado. The Con was fantastic, and I had the opportunity to take classes and paint with some world-class artists. Some of the classes included non-metallic metal, faces and skintones, and several intermediate- to advanced-level critiques. Here is their catalog of fantasy miniature painting classes. I would highly recommend these classes to anyone looking to get into the hobby. A big thanks to the Denver Gamer's Association for putting this on, and to all the teachers and painters who attended.

Also, I have started a fantasy miniature painting group that meets at HobbyTown in Westminster Colorado, but we don't get together with a set schedule as of yet.
